Block Retaining Wall in Jackson, Ohio
A hillside below a Jackson home was held in place with a long block retaining wall, drainage behind it and a freshly graded slope.
The Challenge
This Jackson home sits up on a hill, and the bank around it was slowly giving way. Soil creeping downhill puts pressure on everything around it, and in Southeast Ohio's hilly terrain, water in the slope speeds that process up. The homeowner needed the ground around the house held in place for good and a yard below it that could actually be used.
What We Did
Our crew excavated along the hillside to cut in the line of the wall, then built a compacted stone base so the first course would sit level and solid. From there we set the retaining wall block course by course, stepping it to follow the slope of the property.
Water pressure behind a wall is one of the main reasons walls fail, so we placed drainage stone and a drain pipe behind the block as it went up to carry water out instead of letting it build up. Once the wall was finished, we backfilled behind it and regraded the slope below so the yard drains properly.
- Excavated along the hillside for the wall line
- Built a compacted stone base
- Set the retaining wall block course by course
- Installed drainage stone and drain pipe behind the wall
- Backfilled and regraded the slope below
The Result
The hillside is now held in place by a solid block retaining wall with drainage behind it, and the slope below has been graded smooth and ready for grass. The ground around the house is stable, and the homeowner gained a cleaner, more usable yard.
