One corner of a Pomeroy home had dropped, causing sticking doors and a stair-step crack. We rebuilt support under the footer and repaired the wall.

Trench dug along a settling brick home's foundation in Pomeroy, Ohio

The Challenge

One corner of this Pomeroy home had dropped, leaving the homeowner with sticking doors and a stair-step crack climbing up the block wall. The cause was poor drainage: water had been collecting at that corner and softening the soil beneath the footer. Repairing the crack alone would not have helped unless the support and the drainage were fixed too.

What We Did

Our crew excavated the affected corner of the home and removed the soft soil from beneath the existing footer. We then rebuilt support under the footer on firm ground so the corner is carried by stable soil instead of the saturated material that had let it drop.

With support restored, we repaired the cracked block in the wall. To keep the problem from returning, we added drain tile at the base of the wall and regraded the area so water no longer collects at that corner of the house and soaks into the soil under the footer.

  • Excavated the settled corner
  • Removed soft soil under the footer
  • Rebuilt support under the existing footer on firm ground
  • Repaired the cracked block wall
  • Added drain tile
  • Regraded to keep water off the corner

The Result

The settled corner now rests on firm support, the stair-step crack has been repaired, and water no longer pools at that part of the house. By fixing the drainage along with the foundation, the homeowner dealt with the cause, not only the symptoms.
