The Challenge

An Athens family wanted a usable outdoor space off their back door, but all they had was a sloped patch of grass. Without a level surface, there was nowhere to set furniture or a grill, and rainwater had to be considered so a new patio would not send it back toward the house. The project needed proper dirt work before any concrete went down.

What We Did

We started by excavating the patio area, then built up and compacted a stone base to give the concrete solid, even support. The base was graded with a slight slope so rainwater runs off the patio and away from the house rather than pooling at the back door.

Our crew formed, reinforced and poured the new concrete patio, then finished it smooth with a broom-texture surface for grip underfoot. All concrete cracks eventually, so we cut control joints to control where those cracks form and keep the surface looking clean over time.

  • Excavated the patio area
  • Built and compacted a stone base
  • Graded for runoff away from the house
  • Formed, reinforced and poured the slab
  • Applied a broom-texture finish
  • Cut control joints

The Result

The family now has a level, usable patio right off the back door, with a textured finish that offers grip and a slope that sheds water away from the house. Handling the dirt work and the concrete together gave the slab a solid start.
