The Challenge

This Athens County property sits up a steep hill with no usable access, which meant the owners could not get vehicles up to their building site. A driveway on terrain like this has to reach a safe grade, cross low spots where water collects, and stand up to runoff coming down the slope. It needed to be cut in carefully.

What We Did

Our crew cut and filled along the slope to bring the new driveway to a safe grade for vehicles. Where we hit rock, we broke it out and removed it. At the low points along the route we installed culverts so water can pass under the drive instead of across it.

We built up a compacted stone base along the length of the driveway and topped it with gravel for a solid driving surface. Ditches along the drive carry runoff away so heavy rains do not wash out the gravel or undercut the base on the way up the hill.

  • Cut and filled along the slope to a safe grade
  • Broke out and removed rock
  • Installed culverts at low points
  • Built a compacted stone base topped with gravel
  • Cut ditches along the drive

The Result

The owners now have a gravel driveway climbing the hill to their building site, built at a safe grade on a compacted base. Culverts and ditches keep runoff off the drive, so it is ready for vehicles in all kinds of weather.
